The Digital Strategy

Since 2001, central, regional and local governments have cooperated to create the foundation for the future of the Danish digital public sector. The cooperation is based on comprehensive digital strategies for the public sector, which are multi-annual agreements about the Danish direction of the development of digital government.

The strategic digital initiatives make it possible for the public sector to make joint investments in areas which are particularly complex and in which there are interdependencies across different authorities and sectors.

Digital government has proven to be an effective and efficient tool to rethink processes and workflows in the public sector. The tradition of the public sector's strategic work on digital government entails continuous endeavours for closer public-sector collaboration to deliver good, efficient and coherent services to the public and businesses. The next digital strategy for the public sector is expected to run from 2022-2025.

The government’s digital strategies concern public authorities at all levels of government, whether central, regional, or municipal government. This includes administrative institutions such as ministries, agencies, municipal, and regional administrations, as well as self-governing public institutions such as universities.

Strategic Interaction

The government’s digital strategies are not alone in ensuring that Denmark is well prepared to seize the opportunities of digital development.

Individual authorities have a responsibility to realise the digital potential within its own purview and, thus, to ensure that digial development leads to the desired change. In parallel with joint public sector efforts, there are sector-specific digital projects and strategies, for example municipal and regional digital strategies. This approach to the digital development of the public sector provides a good balance between common strategic targets and local adaptation and priorities.

Furthermore, private businesses, trade organisations, and NGOs also interact with the public sector, contributing to finding common solutions for the digital transition and helping to secure the foundation for a strong and secure digital Denmark.

Digital Denmark

Just as globalisation, digitalisation raises many difficult questions. In a number of areas, Denmark is well prepared for what the future will bring. However, in other areas, there are lessons to be learnt. Therefore, the public sector must work closely with the Danish business community, stakeholder organisations, etc. to establish the basis for a flexible and adaptive society, ready for an ever more digital world.

The last digital strategy ran from 2016 until 2020, setting the course for the Danish public sector’s digital efforts and their interaction with businesses and industry. All levels of government, whether central, local, or regional, take advantage of the opportunities provided by digital solutions and technology on a daily basis. Jointly with businesses and public institutions, the digital strategy from 2016-2020 helped build the basis for a strong and secure digital Denmark. In this way, the strategy helped to fully equip citizens, businesses, and public sector employees for the future digital Denmark.
