The Danish public sector has come a long way in the digital transformation. Digital solutions have therefore become an integrated and natural part of both individual citizens’ and businesses’ daily lives, as well as the workflows of public authorities. This has contributed to an efficient and modern public sector. However, increased digitalization also brings the risk of greater dependence on a few technology companies, and in practice, authorities, citizens, and businesses may experience that they have few real alternatives to the chosen digital solutions.
With the Joint Government Digital Strategy 2026-2029, the public sector partners have initiated collaboration to analyze the technology choices of selected authorities, promote awareness of alternative providers and services, and foster increased market pluralism and competition. These efforts aim to reduce vendor dependence, economic vulnerabilities, and support authorities' sovereignty over their own solutions and data.
At the same time, the 2026 Finance Act has allocated 80 million DKK for the period 2026-2029 to fund an action plan for digital sovereignty.
