New digital identity wallet in development

The development of a new digital identity wallet has officially begun. The first version is scheduled for launch in early 2026.

The IT company Nine has been selected as the development supplier. An advisory board of independent experts will be appointed to support and advise the project.

The Danish Agency for Digital Government has now initiated the development of a so-called digital identity wallet — a mobile app for all citizens. The wallet will contain various digital credentials and create new opportunities for both individuals and businesses.

The first version will include a digital ID and an age verification credential. It will be usable in various contexts — both online and in-person — enabling citizens to verify their identity or confirm their age. Age verification is relevant, for example, in both physical and online retail when purchasing age-restricted goods such as alcohol or tobacco.

IT consultancy firm Nine has been awarded a contract as the development supplier for the wallet project. Nine has experience with public sector IT projects and will contribute to the development of the core components, helping ensure a successful implementation. The contract is valued at DKK 29 million.

The app is expected to launch at the end of Q1 2026.

An advisory board to guide the project

The Danish Agency for Digital Government is appointing an Advisory Board to provide input and ensure that the app is designed with a strong focus on privacy protection, security, accessibility, and usability. The goal is also to ensure that the wallet effectively supports age verification in the retail sector — both online and in physical stores — and is usable by both large and small businesses.

“The Danish Agency for Digital Government has had positive experiences involving advisory boards of independent experts, as seen during the development of the Danish COVID-19 certificate. The Advisory Board will help ensure that considerations such as usability, security, accessibility, and privacy are incorporated from the beginning. We look forward to the insights the board members will bring to the project,” says Adam Lebech, Deputy Director General at the Danish Agency for Digital Government.
